In last month’s blog, titled Mass Hypnosis, I discussed Woodstock ’99, a music festival that took place at an abandoned Air Force base near Rome, New York, more than 22 years ago. I suggested (no pun intended) that it was a good example of a micro experiment in mass hypnosis.
I also mentioned that Woodstock ‘99 was nothing compared to the macro-scale hypnotic experiments performed on entire nations of people – so, today I’d like to address that.
In his excellent book, The Psychology of Totalitarianism, author, Mattias Desmet puts forth a compelling case for the similarities between hypnosis and the phenomenon known as mass formation. His thesis goes something like this:
There is a highly mechanistic ideology at work in the world that is acting to transform all of human society into a totalitarian technocracy – a technocracy being a religious-like cult in which “technical experts” ultimately have the last word on everything, based on their superior mechanistic knowledge, of course. (Does Anthony Fauci come to mind for anyone?)
Author and researcher, David Icke, refers to this transformation as the Totalitarian Tiptoe, a term that perfectly captures the sneakiness and relentlessness of the operation.

Death Cult Experts
A totalitarian technocracy presents itself as the pinnacle of rationality and science. But – make no mistake – it’s ultimately a Death Cult, as anyone who’s been paying attention to the goofball “pandemic” and/or “climate” and/or “financial” shenanigans over the last few years can attest. The cult’s motto may as well be “suppression and death by technology” or some such thing.
The Cult’s mechanistic view places materialism above spiritualism, knowledge above wisdom, and ultimately … fear above Love. Their distorted logic spews forth in statements like this:
According the Experts, our use of technology has caused a planet-wide climate crisis. Luckily, Experts have new technologies to fix this.
What would happen if we stopped what we’re doing and thought for a minute about the absurdity of this statement? Would our minds become calm enough to perceive the circular, nonsensical logic? Would it become still and quiet enough to hear the pointy tips of The Man’s shoes tiptoeing across the tiles?

Mass Formation
According to Desmet, “objects of anxiety” emerge in our society – examples are “terrorism,” “the climate crisis,” “the coronavirus,” and so on – and these tend to encourage a mass formation process to emerge and leap forward in a way that favors totalitarianism and tech-worship. For example, the threat of terrorism induces the “necessity” to develop improved surveillance techniques; the climate crisis is a threat that “necessitates” the development of improved food products such as lab-printed meat, improved means of transportation such as electric cars, and improved means of energy production such as industrial-scale wind and solar farms; the threat of illness “necessitates” that we develop mRNA vaccines to replace our natural immunity; and so on.
The pattern is obvious and grotesque.
Desmet even goes so far as to predict a transhumanist future if we don’t wake up and put a stop to all this horse hockey. He describes a fourth industrial revolution in which organic humans are merged with inorganic technologies, and that it will all be pitched as “an unavoidable necessity.” All of society will be transformed into an Internet of Bodies in which all people are tracked, traced, and digitally monitored by authorities. Anyone who refuses to go along with voluntary, participatory protocols and/or resists legislative (or other) mandates along these lines will obviously be ignorant and “unscientific” and will be dealt with accordingly.
This nightmarish vision of the future is, unfortunately, a complete and total wet dream for totalitarian technocrats.

Pyramid Power
I think Desmet pretty much has it right. I think he is clearly identifying the end goal of the Totalitarian Tiptoe. I think he’s sounding the fire alarm, and it’s up to us to stop, drop and roll, rather than continuing to feed the flames.
I do have one little bone to pick with Mr. Desmet, though. And I think it’s an important one.
Although Desmet seems to have 99% of the game figured out, he places “ideology” as the capstone on his pyramid rather than a small group of conspiratorial Elites – meaning that while he acknowledges that Elites may indeed exist, he imagines them to be unconscious servants of certain ideologies that somehow sprout organically from the natural order of things.
To make his point, he introduces the example of the Sierpiński triangle, a mathematical (fractal) construction, that is easily constructed by following the following simple rules (it’s fun if you try it!):
- Draw three dots, far apart on a blank sheet of paper.
- Randomly draw a fourth dot, anywhere you like.
- With a ruler, measure the distance between this fourth dot and any one of the original three dots. Divide this distance in half and draw a new dot there.
- Measure the distance between this new dot and any one of the original three dots. Divide this distance in half and draw a new dot there.
- Repeat this process as many times as you can stand, and watch in amazement as the fractal figure illustrated above slowly emerges on your paper.
Desmet uses the Sierpiński triangle to demonstrate how an intricate pattern can emerge, just by taking actions that follow a set of simple rules, and nothing more – all without knowing what the end game might be. Multiple people could participate in the pattern construction, and they would not need to work together – they would only need to follow the rules. He argues that a naïve viewer of a completed Sierpiński triangle would mistakenly conclude that the people who created it must have been working together in a planned and coordinated way.
In Desmet’s view, the transformation of human society into a totalitarian technocracy is not the result of a conscious conspiracy to enslave humanity, but rather a simple case of the chips falling where they may.
I have to admit: Desmet’s model/example almost makes sense to me. It certainly gave me pause when I first read his presentation of it. I also assume that it’s a model that must resonate with intelligent skeptics such as my TPD co-host, Brett, who has made the point that there might be conspiracies of convenience that just kind of . . . happen.
Maybe.
Me being the conspiracy-minded guy that I am, I’d argue that Desmet’s example of the Sierpiński triangle is a few fries short of a Happy Meal.

Phil’s Two Cents
In order for the fractal/ideological model to hold water, we would need some evidence that human society, when left to its own devices, would organically evolve into a totalitarian technocracy. But this is decidedly not the case. Human society naturally tends toward tribalism whenever The Man doesn’t tinker with it. Any undergrad anthropology student can attest to this and cite multiple examples. This means that some sort of conscious action is required to bend human society away from its natural state.
The speculation that huge numbers of people can act as unknowing agents and enforcers of simple rules without any knowledge of The Big Picture may, in fact, be totally correct. However, I would argue that someone, let’s call then them the conspiratorial Elite, are the authors of these rules. For, if nature is not the author, then someone must be.
